This graphic print, CONTINUITY, was created for the inaugural BASIS Charter Schools Gala, inspired by the dynamic relationship between technology and the human spirit. You may recognize the artist’s work from the striking mural installations in BASIS Arizona campuses, where his bold representations of environment and elemental forces leave a lasting impact.

CONTINUITY captures the artist’s mastery in blending improvisational imaging with technology. His process begins with simple gestures—“a primitive line, a drop of sweat, or a pixel cluster”—which evolve into intricate, evolving artwork. As Holcomb reflects:

“The story knows how to tell itself. The mistake...the holy accident...and the moment of recognition...the intention of the universe revealed. Stepping in...stepping out. Exerting complete control...losing control entirely. Pulling back on the reins...being dragged through the brush.”

Michael Holcomb is an internationally acclaimed artist with over 60 years of pioneering digital and electronic arts. His work has been widely exhibited and published, and his contributions as a faculty member at universities like the University of Washington and the University of Arizona have advanced digital arts research and education.

For over 20 years, Holcomb has collaborated with BASIS Charter Schools to create innovative installations that continue to inspire the BASIS community. CONTINUITY invites viewers to explore the intersection of creation, control, and surrender.
